5 Hard Truths I've Learned from Hiring in Latin America

Table of Contents

Overseas recruiting is a tough business.

We've hired hundreds of employees in Latin America and each one is a battle.

Here are the 5 biggest issues:

People Problems

At a high level, a service business sells people. People on our team provide the service. We scale by hiring more people to provide more service.

Our product is also people. People are messy. They have personal issues. They have medical issues. They take other jobs.

The issues are non-stop at scale.

Labor Intensive

Finding great talent is a lot of work. There aren't many secrets to it.

We have recruiters on the ground all over Latin America at South. It's still a ton of work to sift through resumes, take interviews, and vet everyone.

Anyone who's hired a bunch of people knows the time suck it can be. We are the lucky ones to take on this work for other companies. Every great hire takes many hours of labor.

Cyclical

The big knock on staffing and recruiting businesses generally is cyclicality.

Companies hire in good times and stop hiring in bad times.

Our business is a little different because Latin American talent costs about 70% less than equivalent US hires.

In bad times, the cost savings is a sales point. In good times, building great teams with top-tier talent quickly is a sales point.

We've still seen quite a bit of "natural churn" recently from customers going out of business.

Times are tough out there.

Fraud / Abuse

We've seen our fair share of bad-faith customers.

We connect them with great talent and they go behind our backs to avoid paying us. Or just refuse to pay invoices.

We set up staffing services, and they chargeback fees from months ago.

We have contracts to protect us, but chasing people down is not fun.

It's Rewarding

The problems are real, but recruiting is a rare business that is good for everyone.
